What is WVMFT?

The West Valley-Mission Federation of Teachers, AFT Local 6554 is the collective bargaining agent for all certificated staff, excluding supervisors and managers, in the West Valley-Mission Community College District. Our organization includes full and part-time faculty as well as counselors and librarians. ACE was voted in as the collective bargaining agent in May 1984. ACE affiliated with the American Federation of Teachers in May 2015. ACE changed its name to WVMFT, AFT 6554 in April 2017

What is a "collective bargaining agent?"

Most important, a collective bargaining agent represents you in your dealings with the administration and the Board of Trustees through legally recognized procedures. Through negotiations, you will have a say in determining your salary and working conditions, which include such items as leaves, loads, and evaluation. Furthermore, should conflicts arise, you will be represented in any grievances.

What kind of external support is available?

WVMFT, AFT 6554 is part of the American Federation of Teachers (AFL-CIO), the California Federation of Teachers and the South Bay Central Labor Council. Our attorney, Robert Bezemek, an expert in labor law, is available for legal advice, contract language consultation, and legal representation.

Why should I join?

WVMFT, AFT 6554 counts on the support of both the full-time and associate faculty. We need both your dues and your support. We contract for salary, benefits and working conditions. As a member, you have the opportunity to vote for representation on the WVMFT, AFT 6554 Executive Board and Steward Council or run yourself, and to serve on various committees. You will receive additional benefits as a member of AFT.

How do I join?

When you become a faculty member, you will be asked to fill out an AFT membership form. These forms are also available from your steward. If you choose to be a member, you can hold office and/or votes for faculty members who will represent you on the WVMFT, AFT 6554 Executive Board and Steward Counci. You will receive all the additional benefits of AFT membership. If you choose to not become a member, you will still pay the same fee, as an agency fee payer, you will still receive all the benefits negotiated by WVMFT, AFT 6554, but you will not be able to vote for representation, or run for office.

Read the News Section and Meetings and Minutes sections on this website. Plan to attend Executive Board, Steward Council and General Membership meetings. These meetings are open to all WVMFT, AFT 6554 members. Stay in touch with your steward for ongoing activities.
